This is a grand time for Summit High School sports, with another boys' team capturing a major championship.

The top-seeded ice hockey squad won the second annual Union County Cup trophy after downing Westfield 4-2 in Saturday night's championship game at Warinanco Ice Skating Rink in Roselle.

The boys' lacrosse team won the state championship last spring and the football team captured North 2, Group 2 this past fall.

A goal by Jon Santina at the 12:21 mark of the third period proved to be the game-winner, snapping a 2-2 deadlock. An empty net goal by Bobby Lawrence with a minute left was the game's final score.

After CJ Meyer - off an assist from Nick Attanasio - gave Westfield a 1-0 lead in the first period, Summit tied the game when Timmy Yager scored unassisted.

Westfield re-gained the lead at 2-1 when Liam Devin scored unassisted in the second period. Later in the period, Eric Stabler tied the game at 2-2, with Mike Nyitray earning an assist.

Summit improved to 14-6-4 overall heading into state tournament play, with the Hilltoppers now on a nine game (7-0-2) unbeaten streak and a three-game winning streak.

Westfield, which will also compete in the state playoffs, fell to 16-6-4.

This was the fourth time Summit and Westfield battled this year, with Summit going 2-1-1.
